James J. Klein papers, 1843-1884.

Consisting of business records, 1843-1884, documenting operation of Klein's general store, and letters with colleagues in Charleston and Columbia, S.C., and elsewhere, commenting on business and political news during antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction eras. Receipts, invoices, bills, and correspondence with H. Klatt & Co. (Charleston, S.C.) who were "wholesale grocers and commission merchants"; A. Loryea, a fellow Russian emigre operating a business in Branchville, S.C., and others chiefly located in Charleston. Receipts record Klein's travels, such as a payment to the Planters' Hotel, 24 Apr. 1852, for four and three quarters days board; and payment, 4 May 1852, from Klein to the Colleton Jail for confinement of an African American slave; some items include illustrated letterhead depicting buildings or people, such as that of Hiram Harris, printer and bookbinder of Charleston (receipt, 14 May 1867). Letter, 12 Aug. 1862, from G.T. Jacoby re removal from office of Judge [C. Baring] Farmer; letter, 12 Apr. 1871, from A. Loryea re Ku Klux Klan activity in Branchville (Orangeburg County, S.C.); and letter, 29 Jan. 1872, from A. Loryea re defeat of Judge [C. Baring] Farmer in election for the Second Judicial District. Also includes 2 volumes, ledger, 1858-1860, recording accounts for coffee, liquor, sugar, housewares, etc., with local residents including F. Fraser, Charles Pinckney, Lawrence Sanders, and many others; and letterbook, 1866-1868 (letterpress copy book) recording activities during Reconstruction era.
